About This Tournament
India's premier chess championship for seniors, organised annually by the All India Chess Federation (AICF). It determines the national champion and contributes to FIDE rating calculations. Top performers are considered for international team selections.
Flagship Tournament: The top-tier event in this sport — results here directly influence national team selection and international qualification.
The Ranking Circuit
AICF's competitive ladder is built on FIDE rating — the globally recognised numerical system. The pathway: unrated beginner → AICF/FIDE rated club or school events → district tournaments → State Championship → state nomination → National Championship. Key FIDE rating milestones: 2000 = National Master (NM) title; 2200 + 3 IM norms = International Master (IM); 2500 + 3 GM norms = Grandmaster (GM). India currently has 80+ Grandmasters. The National Senior Championship is the event AICF selectors watch to name players for the Chess Olympiad team and FIDE World Team Championship. Winning the National title essentially guarantees inclusion in India's Olympiad team selection discussion.

Visit AICF Official WebsiteCommon Questions from Parents
Does my child need prior federation registration to participate?
Yes. Your child must hold a valid AICF (All India Chess Federation) membership, obtained through your State Chess Association. Without this, your child cannot be listed in the official draw. PowerMySport can handle this registration for you as part of our concierge service.
What age group does my child qualify for?
This is an Open (18+) event. Confirm your child's exact eligibility against the official age-cutoff date published in the tournament circular, available on the AICF website.
What is the typical duration of this tournament?
The format is: Swiss system (9–13 rounds) or Round Robin for top players. Depending on your child's progression and the number of entries in their category, plan for 3–7 days of competition. Families should book accommodation and travel with flexibility for knockout advancement.
What if my child doesn't qualify through the standard route?
State associations are allocated a fixed number of spots. If your child narrowly misses selection, two options remain: (1) apply directly to AICF for a wildcard spot, which some editions offer to high-ranked players, or (2) focus on the next qualifying tournament in the cycle to build a stronger record. Our team at PowerMySport can advise on the specific appeals process.
