The Sub-Junior National Championship is the first formal Hockey India national stage and the entry point into the professional development pyramid. The ladder: school/SAI-centre hockey → district hockey → State Sub-Junior trials → Sub-Junior National Championship (U-18) → Junior National Championship (U-21) → Senior National Championship (Dhyan Chand Trophy) → Hockey India High-Performance Program → national team. Hockey India actively scouts at the Sub-Junior Nationals to identify players for the junior residential program. Several players from India's Paris 2024 Olympic Bronze medal squad were first identified nationally at U-18 Sub-Junior level — performing well at 15–17 years of age sets the foundation for everything that follows in a hockey career.
