The path here takes 10–15 years: FIDE-rated school events → state championship → National Championship → earning IM norms (2200 FIDE + 3 norms) → earning GM norms (2500 FIDE + 3 norms) → reaching an elite FIDE rating of 2600–2700. Does my child need prior federation registration to participate?

My child is elite invitational — which category should they enter?
This tournament has 2 separate age-group draws: elite invitational, 18+. Each category runs independently with its own draw, schedule, and award ceremony. Your child enters only the category that matches their age as of the cutoff date set by AICF.
What is the typical duration of this tournament?
The format is: Double round-robin (rapid + blitz). Depending on your child's progression and the number of entries in their category, plan for 3–7 days of competition. Families should book accommodation and travel with flexibility for knockout advancement.
What if my child doesn't qualify through the standard route?
State associations are allocated a fixed number of spots. If your child narrowly misses selection, two options remain: (1) apply directly to AICF for a wildcard spot, which some editions offer to high-ranked players, or (2) focus on the next qualifying tournament in the cycle to build a stronger record.
