About BAI

The Badminton Association of India (BAI) is the national governing body for badminton in India, founded in 1934 and affiliated with the Badminton World Federation (BWF). BAI has run the National Badminton Championships since 1936 and today organises India's full domestic competitive calendar — from age-group ranking tournaments to the Senior National Championship — as well as India's flagship international events (the India Open, a BWF Super 500, and the Syed Modi India International). BAI also selects and fields India's teams for the Thomas Cup, Uber Cup, Commonwealth Games, and Asian Games. Competitive players register through their State Badminton Association, which is affiliated to BAI, and are issued a BAI-ID before they can enter any BAI-sanctioned ranking tournament.

Key Facts

Governs all competitive badminton in India — from sub-junior ranking events to the Thomas Cup and Uber Cup national teams

Runs two parallel ranking circuits: a domestic BAI national ranking and, separately, the BWF world ranking for international events

Age-group categories: Midget/Sub-Junior (Under-13), Sub-Junior (Under-15, Under-17), Junior (Under-19), and Senior/Open — plus a Veteran category for players above 35

A BAI-ID (obtained via the player's State Badminton Association) is mandatory before entering any All-India Ranking Tournament

Entry to BAI's National Championships and Ranking Tournaments is nomination-based — each State Association nominates a limited number of players per category, it is not open entry

Hosts India's two marquee BWF international events: the India Open (Super 500, January) and the Syed Modi India International (BWF International Series, October–November)

BAI publishes a season-long tournament calendar (April–March) on its website, listing every ranking tournament and championship with entry deadlines
