Fédération Internationale des Échecs
FIDE is the world governing body for chess, founded in 1924 and recognised by the International Olympic Committee. It maintains the international Elo rating system, the title system from Candidate Master to Grandmaster, the World Championship cycle, the FIDE World Cup, the Chess Olympiad and the international age-category championships. Every rated player worldwide holds a FIDE ID, issued automatically on entering a first FIDE-rated event.
FIDE Elo ratings are international and separate from AICF national ratings.
Titles in ascending order: Candidate Master, FIDE Master, International Master, Grandmaster, with women's titles at each level.
IM and GM titles require rating norms — performance results in eligible FIDE-rated events — as well as a rating.
Titles are permanent once earned and are recognised worldwide.
